Southwest Technology Center is proud to recognize alumnus James Dempsey, who was recently named chief operations officer of the Fort Sill Chiricahua Warm Springs Apache Economic Development Authority (EDA). Dempsey's professional journey is a testament to the opportunities that career and technical education can provide and the lasting impact of building a strong foundation in technical skills.
Dempsey is a two-time Southwest Tech graduate, completing the Electronics program in 2011 and the Mechatronics program in 2012. Following graduation, he began his career at Apache Casino Hotel in Lawton as a bench technician, putting his technical training to work in an industry that would eventually lead him into executive leadership.
Over the next 14 years, Dempsey steadily advanced through the organization, moving from a technical position into management and leadership. He was promoted to slot technician supervisor in 2017, operations manager in 2018 and slots director in 2019. His experience in both technical operations and organizational leadership helped prepare him for his newest role as chief operations officer.
As COO, Dempsey will help guide the EDA's operations and strategic initiatives, supporting economic growth and long-term opportunities for the Fort Sill Apache Tribe, of which he is a member.
When Southwest Tech reached out to congratulate Dempsey and recognize his accomplishments, he reflected on the role his education played in launching his career.
"It definitely started me off for a killer career," Dempsey shared, referring to his time at Southwest Tech.
His words reflect the value of career and technical education, where students gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience that can serve as a foundation for continued professional growth. Dempsey's journey from the classroom to executive leadership demonstrates that technical education can open doors far beyond an individual's first job.
For Southwest Tech, stories like Dempsey's highlight the importance of preparing students not only to enter the workforce but also to build successful, rewarding careers with opportunities for advancement.
Dempsey's accomplishments serve as an example for current and future CareerTech students, demonstrating how technical skills, dedication and a willingness to continue learning can lead to opportunities they may never have imagined when first entering the classroom.
Southwest Technology Center congratulates Dempsey on this well-deserved achievement and wishes him continued success as he begins this new chapter in his career.
