Students from the Elks Academy with Elk City Public Schools visited the Southwest Technology Center Aviation Maintenance program today to learn more about exciting career opportunities in the aviation industry.
During their visit, students heard from instructors about the career outlook for Aviation Maintenance and the growing demand for Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) mechanics nationwide. The program not only highlighted the pathways available to students after high school, but also emphasized the stability and high demand that comes with earning an aviation maintenance certification.
The Elk City students also enjoyed hands-on activities in the aviation hangar, working alongside Southwest Tech instructors and students. These interactive experiences gave them a firsthand look at the skills required in aviation maintenance, sparking interest and excitement about potential future careers.
“Engaging students in hands-on learning is the best way to inspire them,” said Joe Schmitt, Aviation Maintenance Coordinator and Instructor. “The aviation industry is facing a critical need for trained mechanics, and it’s important to show students that these opportunities are within reach.”
Southwest Tech’s Aviation Maintenance program provides training designed to prepare graduates for FAA certification as A&P mechanics. With the aviation industry continuing to grow, programs like this help build the future workforce that airlines, repair stations, and manufacturers rely on.
