Boy Doing STEAM Activity

Southwest Technology Center recently visited Altus Intermediate School to host a hands-on STEAM Day for fifth-grade students, introducing them to exciting career pathways through engaging activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math.

This event marks the beginning of Southwest Tech’s long-term efforts to ignite career interest at an early age and help students begin envisioning their future in technical education. By connecting with students now, Southwest Tech is laying the foundation for them to explore career-focused programs once they enter high school and beyond.

Students rotated through interactive stations led by Southwest Tech programs including Teacher Prep, Cosmetology, and Health Science, alongside local high school students currently enrolled in those programs. These student ambassadors shared their experiences and demonstrated skills, giving fifth graders a firsthand look at what career and technical education can offer.

“STEAM Day is all about sparking curiosity and opening doors,” said a Kimmie Allen, Counselor at Southwest Tech. “When students get to see, touch, and experience different careers at a young age, it builds confidence and excitement about their future.”

Southwest Tech would like to extend a sincere thank you to Altus Intermediate School Principal Lori Redden, along with the faculty and staff, for their warm hospitality and their willingness to share their students for this impactful educational experience.

Events like STEAM Day reflect Southwest Tech’s mission of Changing Lives One Career at a Time by empowering students early with exposure to real-world skills and career possibilities.
