Southwest Technology Center’s Aviation Maintenance Technology program is designed to prepare adult and high school learners for high-demand careers through hands-on training, industry-aligned instruction, and a strong emphasis on safety, precision, and professionalism. As an FAA Part 147–certified school, Southwest Tech equips students with the technical knowledge and real-world experience needed to pursue FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification.
🛠️ Program Structure & Adult-Focused Flexibility
The Aviation Maintenance program offers multiple pathways to support students balancing work, family, and career goals:
Full-time adult track: approximately 1.5 years
Part-time adult track: approximately 2.5 years
Evening program: Monday–Friday, 5:30–9:30 PM, providing additional flexibility for working adults
(The program is also available to high school students through daytime scheduling, high school students should speak to their high school counselor.)
👨🏫 Instructional Team
The Aviation Maintenance Technology program is coordinated by Joe Schmitt, who ensures curriculum alignment with FAA requirements, oversees instructional consistency, and supports both instructors and students throughout the program.
Instruction is delivered by a team of experienced aviation professionals, including:

Larry Grimes, whose background supports strong technical instruction and hands-on skill development
Jim Schroyer, who joined Southwest Tech in April 2024 after an extensive career instructing at Sheppard Air Force Base and serving in the United States Air Force
The evening program is led by Jason Parker, Fletch Corbin, and Brendan Kelly providing adult students with consistent instruction and flexible learning opportunities.

Graduates of the Aviation Maintenance Technology program are well prepared to test for FAA Airframe and Powerplant licensure and pursue careers as aircraft maintenance professionals.
