Construction Instructor

Southwest Technology Center’s Construction Trades program provides students with the foundational skills needed to succeed in the building and construction industry. From framing and blueprint reading to basic electrical and plumbing, students receive hands-on training using professional-grade hand, power, and pneumatic tools. The program focuses on real-world application, ensuring students understand not only how to build structures, but how to work safely, efficiently, and as part of a team.

One of the most exciting aspects of the program is the hands-on project-based learning that takes place in the shop each day. Students don’t just read about construction—they build. Currently, students are working on a tiny home project, gaining experience in layout, framing, roofing, and finishing work. This type of immersive learning allows students to see a project come together from the ground up while developing confidence in their skills.

The program is led by Instructor Steve Forster, whose industry knowledge and commitment to student success create a strong learning environment. Mr. Forster emphasizes craftsmanship, work ethic, and safety, helping students prepare for both employment and continued education in construction-related fields. Students also have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications, including the OSHA 10-hour safety certification.

The Construction Trades program is open to both high school and adult students. High school students attend in either a morning (8:00–10:50 AM) or afternoon (12:00–2:50 PM) session as part of a two-year program. Adult students may enroll full-time (10 months) or part-time (2 years), offering flexibility for those balancing work and family responsibilities.

Graduates are prepared for careers with construction companies, contractors, and related industries across Southwest Oklahoma. Through strong partnerships with local businesses, Southwest Tech continues to develop a skilled workforce ready to meet the growing needs of our community.
