Emergency Medical Tech

Southwest Technology Center’s Health Science Technology program prepares high school students for rewarding careers in healthcare through hands-on learning, industry-recognized certifications, and real-world clinical experiences. This one-year program provides a strong foundation for students pursuing nursing, emergency medical services, and other allied health careers.

Students in Health Science Technology receive comprehensive instruction in CPR, first aid, medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology while developing essential patient care and safety skills. Clinical experiences and simulated healthcare environments allow students to apply classroom knowledge in realistic settings, building confidence and professionalism before entering the workforce or continuing their education.

The program now offers two career majors: Pre-Nursing and Emergency Medical Responder (EMR). The Pre-Nursing pathway prepares students for entry into nursing and patient care roles, while the EMR pathway introduces emergency assessment, trauma response, and lifesaving interventions for those interested in pre-hospital and emergency care. Students have the opportunity to earn Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) or Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)certifications, giving them valuable credentials and career readiness upon completion.

The program is led by instructor Amber LeGrand, RN whose nursing background and passion for student success create an engaging and supportive learning environment. Ms. LeGrand emphasizes compassionate care, teamwork, and clinical readiness, encouraging students to explore healthcare careers while developing the responsibility and professionalism required in patient-centered fields.

Health Science Technology is open to high school juniors and seniors across the Southwest Tech district and is offered tuition-free. Graduates leave the program with foundational healthcare knowledge, industry certifications, and a clear pathway into nursing and allied health education, supporting Southwest Tech’s mission to prepare a skilled healthcare workforce for southwest Oklahoma communities.
