Teacher Prep

Southwest Technology Center’s Teacher Prep program prepares high school students for careers in education through classroom instruction, leadership development, and immersive field experience. Students explore the foundations of teaching and learning, classroom management, lesson planning, and child development while building the communication and leadership skills essential for today’s educators. This pathway provides a strong start for students pursuing degrees in education and related fields.

A hallmark of the Teacher Prep program is the six week internship, where students are placed in classrooms across Southwest Tech’s district partner schools. During this experience, students apply instructional strategies in real classroom settings, assist teachers with daily activities, and engage with learners of different ages and needs. This hands on internship bridges theory and practice, allowing students to gain confidence, professional skills, and a deeper understanding of the teaching profession.

The program is led by instructor Carol Walker, whose extensive experience in education and passion for mentoring future teachers creates a supportive and engaging learning environment. Carol’s guidance helps students grow as leaders, communicators, and role models while preparing them for postsecondary education pathways in teaching and education support careers. Her commitment to student success and strong partnerships with local schools provide meaningful experiences that inspire the next generation of educators.

Teacher Prep graduates leave Southwest Tech with foundational teaching knowledge, classroom experience, and a clear pathway toward careers in education. Many continue their studies in teacher education programs, returning to serve schools and communities across Southwest Oklahoma.
