Students at Southwest Tech got a hands-on lesson in one of aviation’s most important safety systems this week as Aviation Maintenance Technology instructor Larry Grimes led a class on aircraft ice and rain control systems.
The session focused on the use and maintenance of pneumatic de-icer boots—flexible rubber coverings installed on aircraft wings and tail surfaces that expand and contract to break away accumulated ice during flight. Icing is a major hazard in aviation, adding weight and disrupting the smooth flow of air over the wings. For aircraft mechanics, understanding how to properly inspect, maintain, and troubleshoot these systems is a vital skill.

In construction students are starting our toolbox project, turning raw lumber into something useful they will actually get to keep and use. They will measure, cut, and assemble each piece, putting our skills with saws, hammers, and drills to the test. By the end, they practice accuracy and craftsmanship—students have a tough, handmade toolbox to carry our gear, built by our own hands. 🙂↕️

✈️ This week in Mr. Schroyer’s Aviation Maintenance class, students have been hard at work on the cockpit simulator for the Cessna 414 aircraft. Their focus has been on setting up and configuring the various systems to mirror real-world controls and instruments. From flight instruments and throttle controls to navigation systems and other key components, the simulator is being designed to provide a hands-on, realistic training experience.
The ultimate goal is to have the simulator fully functional, giving students the opportunity to practice and deepen their understanding of aircraft systems and flight procedures. It’s been both a challenging and rewarding process that’s helping prepare them for future success in aviation. 🚀
