Southwest Tech's STEAM Day Inspires 5th Graders at Altus Intermediate School In a lively and educational event, Southwest Tech recently brought the realms of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) to life at Altus Intermediate School. This initiative aimed to introduce 5th-grade students to various career opportunities and engaging activities that fall under the STEAM umbrella. Hosted annually, this event is a crucial part of the Tech Center's efforts to guide and prepare young minds for successful careers in the future. The day was filled with interactive sessions and hands-on activities, where Southwest Tech's Teacher Prep students played a pivotal role. These students integrated activities aligned with their classroom curriculum to offer an immersive and captivating experience for the 5th graders. Among the diverse array of activities, the students had the opportunity to engage in: 1. Creating a Color Wheel with Play Dough: Exploring the artistic side of STEAM, participants crafted vibrant color wheels using play dough, demonstrating the intricate relationship between colors and the science behind them. 2. Engineering Challenge: Building Structures with Solo Cups: Putting their engineering skills to the test, students assembled innovative structures using solo cups, fostering teamwork and problem-solving abilities. 3. Learning CPR Techniques for Adolescents and Adults: Understanding the vital aspect of healthcare, the 5th graders were introduced to CPR techniques, equipping them with life-saving skills and knowledge. 4. Constructing DNA Models with Candy: Exploring the scientific marvel of genetics, the students constructed DNA models using candy, making the complex subject both enjoyable and understandable. The event marks the beginning of Southwest Tech's collaboration with local 5th graders, which extends throughout their high school journey. The aim is to provide continual exposure and guidance, nurturing their interest and proficiency in STEAM-related fields. By engaging students early on, Southwest Tech strives to prepare them for future careers successfully. "Our goal is to ignite curiosity and passion for STEAM subjects in these young minds," remarked Christie Rogers, Director of Student Services at Southwest Tech. "By showcasing the exciting possibilities within these fields, we hope to inspire and guide them towards fulfilling and impactful career paths." The STEAM Day at Altus Intermediate School exemplified Southwest Tech's commitment to educational outreach and fostering the next generation of innovators and problem solvers. As the Tech Center continues its collaborative efforts with local schools, it remains dedicated to empowering students and cultivating a strong foundation for their future professional endeavors. This initiative not only serves as a day of fun-filled learning but also sets the stage for a journey of exploration and growth, ensuring that these young minds are well-equipped to thrive in the STEAM-focused world ahead.
